Thian Lian Sang, a Chin Baptist pastor, was arrested in 2021 by Myanmar’s military junta amidst a wave of detentions of religious leaders from minority ethnic and religious communities. In 2022, he was sentenced to three years for incitement and 20 years under counter-terrorism laws. The arrest and subsequent sentencing of Sang are part of a broader crackdown on religious leaders and civil society under Myanmar’s military regime. Sang’s imprisonment is part of the junta’s ongoing repression of religious freedom and dissent, particularly among ethnic minorities and Christian communities in Myanmar.
Maxim Herkin, a devoted father to his 3-year-old daughter and primary caregiver and provider for his mother and 11-year-old brother, was abducted by Hamas during the horrific terrorist attack on the Supernova festival on October 7, 2023. Hamas militants invaded the festival, massacring attendees who were there to enjoy a peaceful celebration of music. Maxim, who had only attended the event by chance — invited at the last minute by friends, was abducted and has been missing since. His family remains desperate for his safe return, highlighting the brutal impact of terrorism on innocent civilians.
